Webinar | Management of Behavioral Health Patients on Medical Units

April 12, 2018 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

According to the CDC, mental illness has been linked to the increased occurrence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma, epilepsy and cancer in patients. Mental illness is also associated with lower use of medical care, reduced adherence to treatment therapies for chronic diseases and higher risks of adverse health outcomes. The likelihood that a patient on any given non-behavioral health unit may also have a diagnosed (or undiagnosed) psychiatric illness demonstrates why it is essential to manage the risks associated with these patients. The objectives are to:

  • Identify three risk mitigation strategies necessary to safely manage the behavioral health patient in acute care settings.
  • Recognize environmental factors affecting safe care of behavioral health patients.
  • Identify critical handoff communication that contributes to patient and staff safety.

The webinar will be presented by RCM&D Risk Management Consultant Nancy Connelly and Sheppard Pratt Health System Director of Risk Management Barbara Charen.

The webinar has been approved for 1.0 contact hour of Continuing Education Credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow). It is also approved for 1.0 contact hour of Continuing Education Credit toward CPHRM renewal.
