Every year, RCM&D chooses well-deserving local nonprofit organizations to be the recipients of our year-round fundraising and volunteer initiatives. The result of these endeavors is commemorated during our annual Regatta event, a delightful waterfront festivity hosted at the picturesque Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Mark your calendars for this year’s occasion on Friday, September 20. As we approach this year’s celebration, we will shine a spotlight on our chosen beneficiaries, showcasing the incredible impact they make within our communities daily.
About DePaul Community Resources
For 47 years, DePaul Community Resources has opened doors to hope and belonging for families and individuals with developmental challenges across Central and Southwest Virginia. DePaul works to ensure safety, promote permanency, facilitate healing and support independence for the children, individuals, and families it serves.
Since its founding in 1977, DePaul has grown from a small foster care agency into a diverse organization with 13 service locations statewide. Through two service divisions, DePaul provides safe homes, permanent families, integrated community support and opportunities for deep healing all across Virginia.
Foster Care Program
DePaul’s Foster Care program carefully matches young people with unique challenges to nurturing foster families. DePaul’s dedicated, professional staff supports foster parents every step of the way, utilizing a collaborative team approach that helps young people in foster care to heal from trauma.
David and Christy Reed wanted to provide a safe, loving home for children in need no matter what, leading them to become foster parents. “The most rewarding thing is watching the children thrive in our care, hit different milestones, and flourish in our home,” said David. “You always know in your heart that you’re giving everything you can to make a difference in their life.”
To prepare teens in foster care for independence, DePaul works alongside families to ensure the young people in their care are equipped with the skills they need as adults. In support of the Foster Care program, DePaul offers life skills training free of charge to individuals ages 14 to 21 who reside with DePaul foster families or resource families.
Sponsored Residential Program
DePaul’s Sponsored Residential program offers compassionate care in a home-based setting by carefully matching children and adults with developmental disabilities to sponsored residential homes. Sponsored residential providers ensure the individuals in our program receive support including:
- Assistance with personal care and daily living
- Behavior intervention
- Care and compassion
- Medical and health care coordination
- Community access
- Leisure activities
- Emotional support
Counseling Services
Evidence shows that individuals and families who receive counseling while also being able to maintain connections to their community are far more likely to experience lasting success. DePaul’s counseling services are available to anyone in the community, as well as to those in the Foster Care, Adoption, Developmental Disabilities, or Independent Living programs.
- Outpatient Counseling Services: Personalized support and therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families, designed to assist them in managing and overcoming challenges and help to live their lives to the fullest potential.
- Home-Based Services: To lessen the burden on families, the Intensive In-Home program allows qualified clinicians to provide therapeutic intervention services to families in their own home environments.
- Intensive Care Coordination and Case Management: DePaul provides a structured systems of care approach to care coordination, specifically designed for youth and families with the most complex and challenging behavioral and/or mental health needs.
- Telepsychiatry Services: To remove barriers to treatment, telepsychiatry allows individuals and families to connect with a qualified psychiatrist remotely, via video conferencing.
- Crisis Services: Crisis Intervention at DePaul is designed to be a short-term, office-based intervention that will allow an individual to meet with a counselor for up to five sessions.
- Therapeutic Mentoring: Whether in out-of-home placement or living with birth/adoptive family, the Therapeutic Mentoring program aims to improve young peoples’ daily functioning.
