Targeted Attacks: Making Prevention a Reality

The FBI has released a new publication, Making Prevention a Reality: Identifying, Assessing, and Managing the Threat of Targeted Attacks, focused on violence prevention rather than traditional law enforcement techniques.  The publication stresses that law enforcement officers and public safety officials must “identify, assess, and manage the risk of future, planned violence” instead of policing and prosecuting after a crime has been committed.

Partnered with mental health experts, academic researchers and law enforcement officers; the FBI concluded that threat assessment and management teams are the most effective violence prevention strategy.  The publication serves as a hands-on guide for organizations and institutions that are looking to create and run a threat assessment and management team.

“Prevention is not and cannot be a passive process.” Keep reading to learn the steps your organization or institution can take to reduce or eliminate violent crimes.
