Workplace violence is prevalent in American society, and it can impact any type of organization – public or private, big or small, office or manufacturing. However, there are ways that organizations can prepare to minimize the impact.
While each situation is unique in some ways, there are many similarities in the ways that assailants act. As a result, there are steps every organization can take to protect employees and operations.
The first step is to implement administrative programs such as safety management and workplace violence prevention training. Teach employees to know the warning signs of an escalating situation or a person’s mood.
Next, choose the response strategy that works best for your organization. Some of the more common are the Run, Hide, Fight method or ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate).
Mandatory training for employees will help them better execute such plans when needed.
Implement physical security measures such as monitored cameras and controlled access to buildings.
However, even with proper training, any organization is still susceptible to workplace violence. Knowing your insurance policy exclusions and understanding what triggers your coverage can help hasten recovery.
